Does your pediatrician have a crystal ball? So why is he predicting a bleak future for your child?

Don’t let your child get written off as a hopeless case. You’re not just a parent – you’re your child’s best therapist and advocate.

No excuses, no pity: Tough love may be tough, but it’s the best thing you can give your child

Brain Injury in Children

Whether it’s the result of a sustained head trauma at birth or a childhood accident, Traumatic Brain Injury in a child can lead to impaired speech, communication, and motor function. While the severity of the condition may differ from child to child, an inability to move, communicate, and discover the world may lead to mental deterioration as the child grows up depending on other people for everyday tasks such as getting dressed, fed, and washed.

A child with traumatic brain injury may be caught in a vicious circle where the mental deterioration and erosion of social skills caused by his impaired mobility will make him even more physically and mentally impaired over time. As a result, it is important to begin his treatment as soon as possible.

Treatment for Child Brain Injury

Our team of extensively trained therapists are experts in treating children with traumatic brain injuries. The earlier a child is brought for treatment, the better. In some cases, a child who is treated properly from the early stages of his life can become completely independent, and will not need any assistive devices. At Health in Motion, we are proud to have helped several children gain their independence in every aspect of their lives. Depending on your child's condition, we may use a variety of different therapies as a part of his treatment program. These could include:

  • Physiotherapy - This treatment teaches the child functions such as crawling, sitting, standing and walking. In order to accomplish this, physiotherapists use specific remedial exercise regimes (based on the Bobath/NDT approach) which aim to decrease muscle spasms and improve the overall function of the patient.
  • Massage therapy - The massage therapists at Health in Motion specialize in the treatment of children and infants with different disorders. We do recommend massage therapy for children and infants with brain injuries, as it releases tension from the nervous system and improves blood and lymphatic flow throughout the body. These actions lead to a reduction in spasms and involuntary movements, which can improve your child’s overall function.
  • Functional education - Through this treatment, our therapists work to develop and enhance a child’s daily functional activity.
  • Neurodevelopmental therapy (NDT) - This treatment may also be helpful in treating child brain injury.
  • Group therapy - We use group therapy to teach a child social skills and communication as well as improve his daily function and ability to interact.
  • Speech language and communication therapy - We use this therapy to improve a child’s speech and communication skills.
